Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Genius in Bright Spot for Unstable Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had allowed 10 goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or had there never been a binding element maintaining its structure from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, only for him to later acknowledge that the management had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were about to receive for financial irregularities. Reports that he might quit were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Biancocelesti appeared equally disorganized during matches as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining initial five matches, which included the capital clash. At any given moment, it has been hard to ascertain if they're getting better or self-destructing.

The Youngster's Unforeseen Comeback

A single player kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio this season. He completed last season at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, his owning club were attempting to stay there for another season. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to reduce their roster without replacements.

Cancellieri arrived initially when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league with the club in 2022-23, the vast majority of those from the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."

Discovering His Best Role

Maybe Sarri was still trying to identify the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
