Right-leaning responses to the partial disclosure of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the previous administration pointing out the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how heavy censorship cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Administration Defends Censorship with Strong Rhetoric
Administration officials justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so open with the public about such a sensitive legal matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo outlining the censorship process.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's name and likeness appear in some of the documents, the extensive redactions prompt significant questions about the information may be hidden behind them. Some Republicans immediately called for greater transparency.
“People are furious and walking away,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the statute, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump grossly does not comply with both the intent and the letter of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Figures Rally Behind the Disclosure
But, a segment of rightwing commentators and former President allies came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—originating from a justice department led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their identities blacked out.
Yet a few do not, featuring prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, enabled certain conservative figures to go on the attack.
“It’s pretty rich how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been hiding those files for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“The release is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and hide permanently. So they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement concluded.
Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Muted
However, overall comment on the political right was comparatively muted following the disclosure, particularly when compared with the vociferous calls for action that preceded the congressional vote to pass a bill mandating the files' release.
The commentator, who recently accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest proponents for a complete release. In February, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative personalities were provided hard-copy folders of files that contained no new data.
